Game on for Telecoms

Switching to a more adaptive and agile network can help telcos seize the opportunity in online gaming

A FICCI-EY report predicts that the online gaming industry can reach 187 billion by 2022 at a CAGR of 43 per cent. The two big reasons for such an exponential growth being the demography – 75 per cent of India’s population is below 45 years – and internet penetration – with over 560 million internet users, India is the second largest online market in the world. But the big question is, do we have the right network infrastructure to support such a spurt in data consumption? Are the telecom providers prepared?

The gaming experience itself has evolved to become more interactive, more social, and more real-time. Such an immersive experience requires a stable and robust data connection because an instant of ‘lagging’ can be the difference between a glorious win or a brutal loss for a user. Roland Landers, CEO, All India Gaming Federation, believes that with increased internet reach, 5G and broadband proliferation will revolutionise the gaming sector with more people joining online gaming cohorts. “Operators should work with partners to launch cloud-gaming services — this will address different consumer segments — and bring in 5G for high bandwidth cloud games,” he said.

Airtel is already focusing on gaming and monetising its subscriber base. It recently joined hands with NODWIN Gaming, South Asia’s leading esports company, to tap the potential of the online gaming and esports market. It also launched the Airtel India Esports Tour — the first and largest property of its kind in the segment.

As per EY, mobile gaming in India constitutes over 85 percent of the total video gaming market and the segment is evolving at an exciting pace. Experts believe that for telecom operators, interactive gaming can drive a massive influx of user aggregation. “Mobile networks in India continue to indicate resilience over the past seven months. However, with consumption burgeoning and fast-tracking us into the future – network upgrades and capacity enhancements would be needed at the industry level,” said Prashant Singhal, Emerging Markets TMT Leader, EY.

While different online games may require different network speeds depending on the technology it is built on, what’s most critical is network stability. “Gaming technologies are moving towards being leaner so we will be using lesser and lesser bandwidth. But telcos need to seize this opportunity and understand that gaming is a sure shot way to constantly generate revenue from data hungry users,” said Alok Kejriwal, Co-Founder & CEO, Games2win.

So, what should be an ideal network for online gaming? One that meets customer expectations, helps avoid the dreaded ‘gamer rage’ and is highly optimised to give an experience that is instantaneous.

India seems to have its future moves planned out already for online gaming.
